HP and Compaq Laptops Battery Recall

Hewlett Packard (HP) Company on May 14 2009 has announced a worldwide voluntary recall and replacement program for battery packs. The replacement only affected for certain models of HP and Compaq laptops. All customers who are affected on this program will be eligible to receive a replacement battery pack for each verified and recalled battery pack at no cost.

According to The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) these HP & Compaq laptops models can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers. CPSC are aware of two reports of batteries occurred and resulting in flames/fire that caused minor property damage. No injuries have been reported. HP and the battery cell manufacturer believe that certain battery packs shipped in HP and Compaq laptops products manufactured between August 2007 and January 2008 and were sold during the period of August 2007 through March 2008.

The recalled lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are used with various HP and Compaq laptops. Models that can contain a recalled battery include:

What shoud I do with my laptop?

If your HP and or Compaq laptops are affected with this program, determine whether this recall program affects your battery by following these steps:

1. Print a copy of these steps for your reference to determine if you are part of this program.
2. Save and close all open programs. Shut down your notebook.
3. Remove any external power source.
4. Remove the battery from the notebook and you still able to use the laptop by using AC power.
5. Locate and record the bar code label on the battery. Potentially affected battery bar code ids will match or start with the following characters (by program). In some cases, these characters may be preceded by CT.  Note: If your battery packs bar code label does not match or start with one of the codes identified below your battery is not part of these programs. Not all batteries with bar codes beginning with the characters listed below are actually affected.
6. Contact your authorized HP reseller or you can check for HP Battery Replacement Program Web site at http://www.hp.com/support/BatteryReplacement or call (800) 889-2031 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. CT Monday through Friday.
