The Nook to Beat The Kindle
posted by Bram P
Barnes & Noble Inc., last week annouced to release the new digital book reader the Nook. B & N digital book reader Nook will be available in more than 700 retail stores at the end of November or early December 2009.
The Nook digital book reader, which will sell for $259, will offer the same functionality as the Amazon Kindle 2, a huge library of titles and a wireless downloads. The Nook digital book reader is prepared to beat Amazon’s Kindle with some extra features attached.
Clearly, the company is betting on ePub as the format of the future. “Our customers want any book, anytime, anyplace,” said William Lynch, president of Barnes & Noble.com. “And ePub is the most portable format.” The Kindle, of course, does not support ePub.
The Nook digital book reader owners will also be able to lend books to other users of the Barnes & Noble Bookstore, who has installed Barnes & Noble’s e-reader application on a mobile device or are just reading books on their computer. The loans last for up to two weeks. “Friends can do what they have always done, which is lend each other book,” Lynch said. Just like lending a paperback, the lender will not have access to the e-book while it’s being borrowed
In addition, because The Nook digital book reader is supporting ePub, the users will have access to 500,000 free, non-copyrighted library books available through Google Books. Such books aren’t available on the Kindle, because Amazon uses its own proprietary format extension (.azw).
