The New Rugged Laptop from Dell

Dell, Inc, this week has announced its first multitouch rugged laptop The Latitude XT2 XFR. The rugged laptop is designed to meet the unique and demanding needs of customers in the military, police, border patrol, field service organizations, factory fulfillment and first responders. The Latitude XT2 XFR is independently tested to meet military (MIL-STD-810F) and IP54 (Ingress Protection) standards. Its means that resistant to rain, dust, dirt, vibration, extreme temperatures and drops from up to 3 feet.
“It offers single hand manipulation of the laptop in the field and it’s very exciting from that perspective,” Sean Berg, Dell’s sales director for defense and public security said. “Customers are wanting this type of interaction with their computers - anything that can simplify the interaction to do their role is important.”
This rugged laptop comes with Microsoft’s Windows Vista OS for now, but the recently released operating system Windows 7 will be added as an option “very soon” according to a Dell spokesperson.
The Latitude XT2 XFR adds to Dell’s Rugged Mobility Solution offering that includes the fully rugged laptop Latitude E6400 XFR and the semi rugged laptop Latitude E6400 ATG.

- Dual Channel DDR3 1066MHz (1 GB down + 1 slot), up to 5 GB DDR3 1066 MHz
- 12.1″ WXGA DLV outdoor-readable (1280 x 800) LED display with capacitive multi-touch gestures-enabled or optional resistive touch screen
- Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
- 64 GB Solid State Drive; 128 GB Solid State Drive with Full Disk Encryption; 160 GB 5400 RPM SATA
- Optional hot-swappable modules including GPS (in the coming weeks) and webcam
- Optional expansion sliver provides camera/light, serial, and RJ11 inputs
- A full complement of wireless connectivity options including wireless LAN 802.11 a/g/n.
- Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth® Module
- Battery options include 4-cell, 6-cell, and 9-cell units
- QuadCool Thermal management System to allow it to operate in temperatures ranging from minus 10 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit
- Three USB 2.0 ports (one of which is a combo USB/eSATA port), as well as FireWire
- 2-megapixel Web cam
- W x D x H: 12″ (308 mm) x 9.4″ (239 mm) x 1.5″ (39 mm)
- Weight (Starting): 5.4 lbs/2.45 kg with 4-cell battery
The Latitude XT2 XFR is available in the U.S., Canada, France, Spain, United Kingdom, Germany and Italy via all of Dell’s sales channels, including PartnerDirect and it starts at $3,599.
