Hybrid Cellular-Satellite Phone

satellite-phoneThis week a cell phone service provider AT&T and TerreStar a secure satellite terrestrial mobile broadband network provider announced information about their hybrid cellular/satellite phone handset to be launch early next year. They plan to launch a Windows Mobile 3G phone called the TerreStar Genus (pronounced ‘Jen-us’) that will be aimed at business users segment. The handset will use AT&T’s network service for traditional cell phone service and in other way it will use TerreStar’s satellite phone service when out of range of a cellular signal.

TerreStar Genus

The TerreStar Genus is the world’s first smart phone that provides 3G cellular wireless connectivity with an all IP satellite network. This cellular - satellite phone is use integrating AT&T’s 3G (HSPA) voice and data network with the TerreStar next generation satellite voice and data capability. This cellular-satellite phone is offering coverage throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and offshore coastal waters.

The TerreStar Genus is a regular sized smart phone measuring 4.7 in x 2.5 in x 0.8/0.6 inches;  provides premium features such as one phone number for satellite and cellular service, 3.0 megapixel camera, a 2.6″ touch screen, a full QWERTY keyboard, 100 MB memory size, supported for microSD card up to 16 GB and Windows Mobile application Outlook Mobile, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office Mobile and PDF reader.

This cellular-satellite phone enables you to make connectivity with Bluetooth v2.0, Class 2, WiFi 802.11b/g, USB 2.0 Hi Speed supporting data modem, firmware update, mass storage and ActiveSync, also equipped with GPS.

This cellular-satellite phone will run on network frequencies 850/900/1800/1900 MHz for GSM/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA networks and 2000-2010 MHz, 2190-2200 MHz S-band for satellite and terrestrial.

For multimedia capability this cellular-satellite phone has many features that support for video playback (H.264, H.263, and WMV), audio playback (MIDI, MP3, [e] AAC [+], WAV, WMA, AMR-NB and AMR-WB), digital voice recording (AMR-NB and AMR-WB) and image viewing (BMP, JPEG, GIF and TIFF). These features will be supported by a 3.0 megapixel camera with auto focus, digital zoom and Flash.

No pricing has been announced but it sounds like this satellite phone service will not be cheap. When you buy the Genus, AT&T will require you to sign up for AT&T data and voice service (just like the iPhone), as well as a monthly satellite access feature.

The Terrestar Genus is scheduled to launch in the first three months of 2010, and will only be available to enterprise, government, first responder units, and small business users. Plans are in the works to introduce a similar service for individual consumers.
