Sony Vaio AC Adapter Recalls

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in October 29, 2009 announced a voluntary recall of the Sony AC adapter from Vaio laptop product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Sony said it has received four reports of adapters short-circuiting, with none of those incidents occurring in the U.S. No injuries have been reported, Sony said.
The Sony AC adapter to recall is about 69,000 pieces, because their insulation inside the AC adapter can fail over time, posing an electrical shock hazard to consumers. Those Sony AC adapters were manufactured in China by Sony Electronics Inc. of San Diego.
The recalled Sony AC adapter model is the Sony VGP-AC19V17, which was supplied for following products
- All-in-one Vaio computers: VGC-LT series and VGC-JS2 series (40, 50, 70 & 90)
- Vaio Docking stations: VGP-PRBX1 and VGP-PRFE1
The recalled Sony AC adapter model were sold at SonyStyle stores and Web site authorized electronics retailers and authorized business- to- business dealers nationwide from September 2005 through October 2009 for between $900 and $3300 for desktop computers and $250 and $300 for docking stations.
The recall only relates to adapters with certain serial numbers; you can enter your number on Sony’s site to see if your product is impacted.
Consumers can contact Sony for free replacement to the affected Sony AC adapter. Sony has established a Web site where consumers can check if their model is eligible for a replacement and arrange for a replacement. In the U.S., consumers can call 1-877-361-4481 to arrange for a replacement.
