How do you tell if a digital camera has character and endurance? When the digital camera is found working after surviving a 3000 feet skydiving experience!

This is precisely what had happened, when a skydiver accidentally drops his digital camera and video recorder during a skydiving trip.

I am glad that these gadgets didn’t land on someone’s head!

The increasing cost of new cameras

As the pound has struggled against the yen and manufacturing costs have increased, the cost of buying a new digital camera has gone up as well. A year ago, you could purchase a reasonably well-featured camera brand new for under £50; today that figure has increased to around £60 – and that’s without the extra cost of consumables such as memory cards. Only ten pounds difference, maybe – but in these recession-hit times, ten pounds can mean a lot. Fortunately, you can do something about it: buy used. Suddenly, you’ll find that you’re saving a lot more than a mere tenner.

How used is used?

Digital single lens reflex cameras (DSLRs for short) have set the industry standard for photographers around the world.  They produce top-notch photos by using a mirror and a prism, enabling you to use one camera for a vast range of lens focal lengths.  That’s the #1 reason why DSLRs are so popular.

However, there are several disadvantages to almost every DSLR.  They are inconvenient, bulky and heavy.  Because DSLR cameras use a mirror to reflect light to the viewfinder, they require a very deep body.  They produce terrific images, but lugging a cumbersome DSLR around can get very tiring.
